Purple

Royalty and Spirituality

Purple is royalty. A mysterious color, purple is associated with both nobility and spirituality. The opposites of hot red and cool blue combine to create this intriguing color.

Whether it is lavender, violet, plum, magenta, mauve, lilac, amethyst, eggplant or rich royal purple, the color purple is one of the most beautiful and beloved colors.

On the color wheel purple is directly opposite from yellow, which means that yellow and purple are complimentary colors. When complimentary colors are used together or placed next to one another they become extremely vibrant and have a very heavy contrast. That means if you have a blank purple wall in your home and you hang something yellow on it, the yellow object will be extremely bright and will seem to "jump" off the purple of the wall.

Colors produce certain moods, and in the case of purple it has an uplifting and calming effect on our brains. Purple encourages creativity and has a sense of royalty and spirituality about it. Using purple in a room can boost the creativity in children, artists or even office workers, although too much purple can be overwhelming and can cause feelings of moodiness. It's best to use pops of purple to stimulate creativity rather than dousing a whole room in it.

Purple is said to have been the favorite color of Cleopatra.
